She will be remembered by all who knew her for her independent spirit and her commitment to the principles and causes that guided her life. She loved travel, reading, social events of all kinds, golf, and Nebraska football. Born in Omaha, she was the oldest child of Richard E. "Dick" and Mariann Collins. She was a graduate of Brownell-Talbot School and eventually pursued a career with the Nebraska Department of Labor, from which she retired in 1991. She married Thomas L. Leuck, and together they had 4 children, Colleen, Colette, Constance, and Thomas J. After Jo Ann and her husband were divorced, Omaha World-Herald editorial writer Larry Wilson became her life partner until his death in 1988. In 1995, at the age of 59, Jo Ann graduated from College of St. Mary's Nursing School and moved with her daughter, Constance to Southern California to begin a new life. She launched a career in public health that included 6 years of service and care of the students of Our Lady of Talpa School in Los Angeles and another 10 years as Provider Relations/Nurse Specialist with Harbor Regional Center, Torrance, CA. Her love of travel took her all over the world, to Europe, South America and Asia. She experienced living in Guyana, did volunteer work in Mexico, and walked the Great Wall of China. She also loved cruising, and enjoyed several extended trips with her good friend and partner, Balduin "Bill" Welsch during the last years of her life. She counted among her many achievements swimming with dolphins off the coast of Florida, sipping Champagne on the pink beach of Bermuda, studying Spanish with her grandsons in Cuernavaca, Mexico, and touring Paris and London with her grandchildren, a trip that included a ride through the then newly built Chunnel. She provided care to the people of northern Mexico with the Flying Samaritans, cruised the Rhine River in Germany, and spent time in the Black Forest of Hungary. She traveled to Rome, Venice and Pompeii and watched a glacier calve on Glacier Bay in Alaska. She lived with the Sisters of Providence through Americorps as a new nurse caring for the sick in South Los Angeles and dined at the mansion of the U.S. ambassador in Barbados. Her life was rich and full. She will be missed. She is survived by her brother, Dr. Richard E. Collins, Littleton, CO; 4 children, Colleen Oglesby, Seattle, WA, Colette Green, Harlan, IA; Constance Leuck, Long Beach, CA, Thomas J. Leuck, Peculiar, MO; 8 grandchildren. Preceded in death by her parents, Richard E. and Mariann Collins; sister, Judith Matthews.

At JoAnn's request, no service is scheduled.

Martin W. Dalton died Sunday Aug. 16, 2009 in the presence of his wife, children, and grandchildren, after a two year battle with cancer. He held on to life long enough to escort his new granddaughter-in-law, Lurisa, at her wedding to Jack's grandson Steve the day before his death.

Jack, the youngest of three siblings, was born in his maternal grandmother's house in Hominy, Okla. on July 20, 1931 to Derrick Dalton and Helen Agnes Moffatt Dalton. He married Marian Lyn Stull on April 21, 1953 in Rapid City, S.D. and they kept their marriage secret from the public for a month until Jack graduated from college so as to not be expelled from single-student housing. Jack was educated in the Bingham and Alliance, Nebraska public school systems and graduated from Alliance High School in May, 1948. He attended Chadron State Teachers College, Chadron, Neb., and graduated Cum Laude in 1953 with a B.S. in Chemistry. After two years in the Army, he attended Kansas State University, Manhattan, Kan. and received his M.S. in Chemistry in 1958.

Jack liked to tell people that he taught at four different institutions of higher education and never moved his office. Hired in 1958 by President Eugene Chaffee, Jack served Boise Junior College, Boise College, Boise State College and Boise State University for 37 years with distinction, progressing from the rank of Instructor in 1958 to Professor in 1971. He retired in 1995, having served as Acting Chairman of the Chemistry Department from 1968-1970 and Chairman of the Chemistry Department from 1970-1987. Jack served as the school-wide Curriculum Committee Chairman during the period when BJC transformed itself into a four-year institution, helping to build programs of instruction across all majors of the college. He served on the Faculty Association of BJC from 1961-1964, serving as President in 1963-1964. He served on the Faculty Senate of Boise State from 1968-1980 and 1987-1989, and was Chairman of the Senate in 1972-1973. In 1970, he was honored as Outstanding Faculty at Boise State, and in 1971 was honored as an Outstanding Educator of America. He really was a Bronco fan before it was cool, attending Bronco football and basketball games with his family from his hiring in 1958 and serving as official timekeeper and scoreboard operator at Bronco basketball games for many years.

He was an active member of the Idaho Academy of Science for many years, serving that organization as Executive Secretary, Vice-President, and President. He was a Boise State representative to the Pacific Northwest Conference on Higher Education (1965), a representative to the National Conference on Faculty Evaluation (1973) and an Idaho representative to the American Association for the Advancement of Science (1980). He was active in stamp collecting and glass collecting with his wife Marian and they formed many dear friendships with individuals through these activities. He had a life-long enthusiasm for gardening and loved to work in his large rose garden. He was an avid reader of both fiction and non-fiction, a trait he passed on to his children. During his retirement, he and his wife Marian enjoyed their world-wide travels, cruising the Caribbean several times, making several cruises down the rivers of Europe, and visiting China, the British Isles, Russia and Australia. Jack always said that his proudest accomplishments were his children (Allen, Teri and Wendy) his grandchildren (John, Steve, Jack, Annie, and Ben) and his great grandchildren (Jake and Emily). In his last days, he wanted it to be known that "I had a good life. I did almost everything I ever wanted to do, and I enjoyed it all."

Jack is survived by his wife of 56 years, Marian, his son Allen Dalton and wife Sandra; daughter Teri Sackman and partner Laurel; daughter Wendy Leslie and husband Kenny; grandson John Sackman and great grandson Jake; grandson Steve Sackman, wife Lurisa and great-granddaughter Emily; grandson Jack A. Dalton, granddaughter Annie Treinen and husband Mike; and, grandson Ben Dalton. He is also survived by his sisters Jeane Rice (husband Otis) of Appleton, Wisconsin and June Brennan of Ellsworth, Nebraska as well as by numerous brothers- and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.

Martin W. Born on a farm near Cozad, Nebraska, he was a graduate of the University of Nebraska and served three years aboard submarines with the US Navy during World War II. Hart joined the staff of the Lincoln (NE) Journal Newspaper in 1950. He served as farm editor, government reporter and editor of the editorial page before being named managing editor in 1974. He left the newspaper to become natural resources coordinator for Governor Charles Thone. He later lobbied for the city of Lincoln in the Nebraska Legislature and then established a public relations business. In 1991 he and his wife, Mary, moved to Sun City, Arizona where he became active in community affairs, including service as board member of the Sun City Homeowners Association and Sun Cities Area Historical Society. He served as President of the Sun City Republican Club, the Nebraska Club of the Sun Cities, and the Sun City Bell Lions Club. For a time, Jack was a blogger for the Arizona Republic. He was a member of the Willowbrook United Methodist Church, Sun City. Hart authored a biography of Virginia Smith, a resident of Sun City West. After serving 18 years in Congress, she was the only woman from Nebraska ever elected to the US House of Representatives. In 2001, after the death of Mary, he married Judy Taylor, who had moved to Arizona from Pennsylvania. He is also survived by daughters: Linda Stroh of Glendale (George Stroh) and Susan Hart of Federal Way, Washington; two granddaughters; and three great-granddaughters. Jack has donated his brain and body to the nationally acclaimed Sun Health Research Institute in the hopes that they soon will find a cure for Alzheimer's, the disease that finally claimed him. Memorial donations may be made to the Willowbrook United Methodist Church, 19390 N. 99th Avenue, Sun City, Arizona 85373 or Sun Health Research Institute, 10515 W. Santa Fe Drive., Sun City, Arizona, 85351. Memorial service will be held Saturday, October 3, 2009 at 10:30 A.M. at the Willowbrook United Methodist Church, 19390 N. 99th Avenue, Sun City, Arizona.

A descendant of Pilgrim John Howland, he joined the Nebraska Society in 2008.

Martin W. The storied ship is a staple in U.S. history and for many a symbol of religious freedom, American democracy and the Thanksgiving celebration.

Beerman, 47, said Thanksgiving always has been his favorite holiday. When he learned in 1989 that he is linked to the Mayflower, the day became even more meaningful. He said, "It really makes the history part of it come alive. . . . Being a Pilgrim wasn't easy. Just knowing more about them and understanding that's your family makes it more interesting than what you read in history books."

In his Children's Hospital office recently, Beerman, vice president of marketing, shared a stack of old records - birth certificates, death and census records, marriage licenses, wills and deeds. Each one is a piece in a giant puzzle.

Beerman became a detective, searching for clues to connect the dots of his family history. He built his case one generation before another.

"You start with what you know," Beerman said. "Then work your way back.

"But discovering that his roots led to New England and the famed ship was a surprise.

After his grandmother died in Iowa more than 20 years ago, Beerman's interest in his ancestry kicked in.

Through his search, he found that his family slowly migrated from New England to the Midwest. As he researched, he found himself plotting the reverse course, following one ancestor at a time on a path back to New England and eventually to the Mayflower itself.

One way he marked his discovery was personalized license plates that read "1620" on one car and "Pilgrim" on another.

Along the way, he discovered many other family tales.

One relative served as a soldier in the Revolutionary War, later receiving a pension of $8 a month. Pension records, which often listed descendants, were a valuable source of clues.

Other relatives, he found, served in the Civil War and the War of 1812.

Such details help make the past pop."When you can frame it in terms of those events, for me, it makes history more interesting," said Beerman, who graduated from Creighton University with a journalism degree.

He said his wife, Jane, often jokes that in nearly two dozen years she has never spent a vacation that didn't involve visiting a burial ground. The couple have two teenage children.

Cemeteries often offer worthy tips."You're looking for graves," he said. "You're looking for families.

"When lucky, he would find three or four generations together in one spot, providing valuable clues to the step in his journey, he said.

It's important, too, for him to keep a record for his own descendants. In several hundred years, his relatives might find this work useful, he said.

"You're documenting this for a future generation," he said.

He also helps others trace their family history and find links to the Mayflower as historian for Nebraska's chapter of the Mayflower Society.

It's much faster and easier now with the Internet. His ancestral search - done before the computer age - moved like a crawl compared to what now can be found with a click.

During his own search, he often traveled and wrote hundreds of letters.

All 50 states, the District of Columbia and Canada have established society chapters to honor the Mayflower's passengers and their roles in American history. The society is based in Plymouth.

Paul S. Bumpus, the society's historian general in Plymouth, said estimates put the number of Mayflower descendants in this country between 30 million and 40 million people. Most, he said, simply are unaware of their connections.

The society offers membership to people who prove a line of descent from at least one of the 29 Mayflower passengers who left descendants.

Bumpus, who had 22 family members on the ship, said the society has about 27,000 active members and about 80,000 throughout its existence. It was founded in 1897.

Nebraska's chapter has about 300 members. Iowa's has more than 360, many of whom are from the western edge of the state, said Ruth M.F. Tucker, Iowa's chapter historian, who had five ancestors on the ship.

Beerman, Bumpus and Tucker all can trace their families to Richard Warren, making them distant cousins. Others with more famous names who descended from Warren include Ulysses S. Grant and Franklin D. Roosevelt.

The passengers boarded the Mayflower in September 1620. They reached their destination in the winter. The harsh weather contributed to many deaths and struggles as some created a colony at Plymouth.

Some passengers left England to escape religious persecution. Others looked to build new lives separate from the church. Many were likely frightened, cold and lonely. But all were bound together, traveling to an unknown land and an uncertain future.

Beerman tries to keep that in mind."An interesting thing to remember is that these people were just like us," he said. "They were just trying to survive."

For the sidebar graphic:

http://content.omaha.com/media/maps/graphics/1127tree.jpg

Who was Richard Warren?
